FAQ's

Natural opal is formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As water runs down through cracks in the earth, it picks up silica from sandstone, and carries this silica rich solution into cracks and voids, caused by natural faults or decomposing fossils. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a silica deposit.

It is said that opal takes 5 to 6 million years to form in the earth.

Much of the world’s precious opal is mined in Outback Australia where it is said that a unique combination of geological conditions permitted the formation of opal near the margins of an ancient inland sea. Australia is regarded as the world’s leading source of opal and of the world’s finest opal.

Once the opal has been found in rough it is then washed down to remove excess opal dirt. Direct from our family mineral claim and wash plant, your opal is then sent to be professionally cut and polished to perfection ready to present.

Opals are classified by the two characteristics of body tone and transparency as seen in the below chart.

Your opal will love to be worn but in order to keep it looking its best cleaning is important.  Soak your opal in warm water with very mild soap for a couple of minutes and no longer then allow to dry and hand polish with a soft jewellery polishing cloth.

You should never use heavy chemicals and avoid heavy activity such as gardening or cleaning whilst wearing your opal.

Storage of your opal should be kept safely wrapped in a soft cloth or resting on a soft lining inside a jewellery box case to stop it rubbing against other stored items.
